RUN

Run through the eyes of the Director

After a very promising debut movie 'Anandam', director Lingasamy is geared for his next release Run. In this interview, he talks about his new movies, his passion for cinema, his inspirations and the technology behind his movies.

Q. Tell us something about Run and what inspired you to make it?

Ans. My first movie Anandam was a family drama, and the nature of the genre calls for strong dialogues and high emotional content.

For my second movie, I wanted to do something totally different. Something light, racy, fun, a movie the youth can associate with. The dialogues in Run are very natural. People speak the way they would in real life.

The story is about a small town boy who comes to the city and his experiences there. As I was telling you earlier all interactions are very spontaneous and natural. They do not come across as dialogues specially written for the actor and the situation. In the scene in which the hero comes to the city for the first time, he is seen coming out of the railway station. Just then, a plane flies overhead and he stops to watch it. A girl who is walking beside him asks him whether he is new to town. The hero is perplexed, and asks her how she knew that. She smiles and says that she guessed it because he stopped to watch the plane.

Something like this happened in my life too, when I can to Chennai to try my luck in films. I got into a bus and saw a girl sitting on the last seat. I kept looking at her but she did not notice me. My bus stop came and I got down feeling very disappointed. Just as I was about to step off the bus, she looked up and made eye contact. I felt very happy. I jumped back into the running bus. She must have been very surprised to see me back. When she got down, I followed her. After some time she turned back and asked me why I was following her and I said because she looked at me. I asked her some question about herself and she some about me. Later when I got to know her better, I found out that she had given me wrong information about herself. Her reason, "Why should I tell you everything in our first meeting?' This inspired me when I was doing the railway station scene.

For the hero Madhavan fit the role perfectly with his chocolate boy looks. I have used Madhavan differently in this movie. He has a more action-oriented role here. The heroine Meera Jasmine has given a very good performance.

Q. Why did you name your movie Run?

Ans. Initially I had picked out another name for the movie. But the producer A.M. Rathnam suggested that I call it Run. He felt that the name was more suitable as it was a movie for young people.

Here I must add that A. M Rathnam is a wonderful producer. He does not talk about compromising to stick to the budget. He always insists that we should make the best possible film and not worry about other considerations.

Everybody has given their best and done a very good job. Vidhya Sagar has given very good music.

Q. What is your opinion about DTS and why you opt for it?

Ans. Run is an action movie and DTS is the ideal format to highlight the punch and pace. Actually, I now regret not using DTS for Anandam. Mammootty recommended that I use DTS for Anandam. At that time, I thought that DTS was only for action but now I realise that DTS highlights even emotions and makes them more poignant.

Q. What is your opinion about Avid editing systems?

Ans. Avid is very good. When you edit on the Avid, you can experiment and immediately see the results. The only possible drawback that I can think of is that the picture is not of film quality.

Q. Why did you opt for Media Artists for you audio postproduction?

Ans. Media Artists is the best for audio. The producer A. M. Rathnam has mixed all his movies here. I have heard so much about Sridhar and his work and I am looking forward to meeting him. So far, everyone here has been helpful and supportive.
