Paarthale Paravasam
A Cinematic Journey Through the Human Mind
Interview with Director K. Balachander
Q. How does it feel to have reached the landmark of 100 films in your career?

Ans. I believe in quality not quantity. It is important to me that I make a good movie. The number game does not interest me.

Q. What changes have you perceived in industry trends from your first to the present movie?

Ans. The technology used to make movies has changed, there is no doubt. But the basic part of cinema remains unchanged through the ages, whether it be Indian or foreign movies. And this important element is emotion.

Basic emotion has not changed through the ages. Lifestyles and outlook have changed but the way people react and feel are the same.

Q. How did the story of 'Paarthale Paravasam' take shape?

Ans. My movies are all built around characters, their emotions and their relationships. I have a fondness for middle class characters and my stories revolve around them. My films are midway between aesthetic or art cinema and commercial cinema.

My film explores the different angles of a woman's mind. The various facets of a man-woman relationship are of specific interest to me. There is so much to it. I do not concern myself with an entire lifetime's relationships and emotions, just one moment in time. My canvas is small. I do not have huge sets, my stories do not span time and space and I do not picturise my stories in exotic locales. This does not mean that I will not go to foreign locations at all.

In my films the story starts with the seed, the central idea or thought, and unfolds through the characters. It does not have an elaborate story with twists and turns at every stage or a narrator guiding the story.

At that particular point of time I study the mind of the characters from different points of view. I believe that "the mind defies all definitions". In 'Paarthale Paravasam' the idea is "the hastiness of a woman in coming to a decision". This is the seed, which germinated into the story.

Q. What is the most important aspect of a movie according to you? And has the craft of movie making changed through your career?

Ans. I would say screenplay. It is the backbone of a film. A good movie has a good script. Nowadays films are made around songs and many of the songs have nothing to do with the story. The songs should support the story and be an integral part of it. The story should take recourse to song and not vice versa.

I dissect the human mind for emotions and deal with them in detail. That is the KB stamp and it can be found in all my movies.

Since the story is my focus, technology does not disturb me. This does not mean that I have not adopted technologies in my movies. What I mean is that they are just tools with which I tell my story and do not become the central element of my film.

The director's primary concern should be to create situations and characters that the audience can identify with.

Q. For a brief period you took a sabbatical from films and worked in television. How was your experience with TV?

Ans. For me television was a new medium to explore. I moved from theatre to films and then from cinema to television. I wanted to experience the potential of the medium and the instant reaction it evokes.

Q. How has the audience changed through the ages?

Ans. Society has undergone a rationalistic revolution. Earlier the heroes were all-virtuous and could not think or do wrong. Filmmakers did not dare touch gray areas. Nowadays any theme is acceptable. Earlier cinema was cinema, now cinema is time pass.

Q. Why did you opt for DTS for 'Paarthale Paravasam'?

Ans. A.R. Rahman has given outstanding music and his music sounds best on DTS. It gives extraordinary viewing pleasure. Especially in song and fight scenes the impact is incredible. In a huge crowd scene DTS helps to bring you to the middle of the action. The fabulous separation of sound makes that possible.

Q. What were your reasons for opting for Media Artists as your mixing studio?

Ans. Media Artists is a class apart so where else would I go. It has good sound engineers. Sridhar is a big draw. He has a great equation with Rahman. Rahman calls him and tells him what he wants and Sridhar creates that effect.
